An Idea for Using New Media

January 9, 2009

It’s not really my idea, but if anyone hear listens to StoryCorps on NPR, you know that people are recording important stories for posterity and in the bonus some of them get a lot of airplay. I think we have a need here at Langley, maybe elsewhere at NASA, to capture some of those cool stories that engineers tell at picnics and holiday parties. Especially the senior engineers, retired engineers who were on neat projects and really anyone who has a bit of interesting information that will be lost when they retire, pass on or go to work for Ricoh and forget all about NASA.

It might require a bit of hardware, if these folks don’t have at least a microphone on whatever computer they use, in order to support recording the stories, and a fair bit of disk drive.

There is a lot of hardware over at the LaRCmart, maybe a server can be had, maybe some mics and cameras (Nav Center has some) but the hard part would be getting the word out for these folks to come across with their stories.

What do you think?

That’s a great idea! Gail Langevin is working on something along those lines, based on Story Corps. Let’s ask her for an update.
